Chapter 4
"Screw pride. I need help," Midnight Avenger said, pulling her phone.
She checked to see who was logged into their network. All of their phones worked all the time, but they logged in when they went on patrol. If a heroine needed help she was expected to contact someone already on patrol.
The only one still logged in was Kunoichi. Midnight Avenger groaned. She was hoping for Ms Amazing, Gold Avenger, or Glory Woman. A veteran heroine. Even Catgirl, but they were all logged off.
"No choice," she said, tapping Kunoichi's icon.
"Hello?"
"Kunoichi, Midnight here," she said. The heroine hesitated, feeling her face heat up. "I've — uh — I've had a setback."
"Setback?"
"I got caught by mobsters," she said. "I escaped, but I'm pretty battered. I need help to finish the job. Are you up for it?"
"Of course! Where are you?" she said. "I'll be right there and we'll kick mobster ass."
"Awesome," she said, and gave her exact location. Not that Kunoichi really needed it, since she could zero in on Midnight Avenger's phone. "I'm hovering about five hundred feet up."
In truth, she was not exactly where she told Kunoichi to find her. She'd moved a mile away in case the mobsters had rifles with infrared scopes. Her Object of Power would protect her, but any bullet fired up in the air had to come down somewhere. An innocent civilian could be hit or killed. So she flew back over to the apartment complex once she finished speaking to Kunoichi.
"They're gone? That fast?" she said, stunned to see the empty parking places and dark windows of the apartment. "That just sucks rotten eggs."
She rose up higher, looking all around for the mobsters. Looking for a line of SUVs moving through the city streets. Unfortunately, in the dark all she could see at a distance was headlights, not what type vehicle it was.
"I'm here," Kunoichi said, streaking up at breakneck speed. "Where are they? How many?"
"They're gone."
"What? I got here as fast as I could."
"Not your fault," Midnight Avenger said. "Mine. I took my eyes off of them just long enough to call you, and looked again and they were gone."
"That makes me so mad," Kunoichi said, dark eyes narrowing as she stared down at the apartment complex. "Too often the worse kind of criminals go free to continued their evil deeds with impunity."
"I know. It's so aggravating."
Kunoichi looked her over, one brow raised. "Are you okay? You look…disheveled."
They hovered face to face, just half an arm's length apart. Midnight Avenger could smell Asian heroine's delicate perfume and feel body heat radiating from her. There was no hiding her battered appearance from her sharp eyes.
"More like bedraggled," Midnight Avenger said. "I'm pretty much healed from the beating I took. I'm ninety, ninety-five percent."
"Not what I was talking about. You told me that you had a 'setback' and in Seattle that means…"
"It means that here, too," Midnight Avenger said. "In Synne City, when a bad guy catches a heroine he considers it happy times for his cock.
